Blogging as an income generating source

Some people have strong personal feelings with respect to making money from their blogs.

If you think commercializing your blog is evil, immoral, unethical, uncool, lame, greedy, obnoxious, or anything along those lines, then don’t commercialize it.

If you have mixed feelings about monetizing your blog, then sort out those feelings first.

If you think monetizing your site is wonderful, fine. If you think it’s evil, fine. But make up your mind before you seriously consider starting down this path.

If you want to succeed, you must be congruent.

Generating income from your blog is challenging enough — you don’t want to be dealing with self-sabotage at the same time. It should feel genuinely good to earn income from your blog — you should be driven by a healthy ambition to succeed.

If your blog provides genuine value, you fully deserve to earn income from it.

If you do decide to generate income from your blog, then don’t be shy about it. If you’re going to put up ads, then really put up ads. Don’t just stick a puny little ad square in a remote corner somewhere. If you’re going to request donations, then really request donations.

Don’t put up a barely visible “Donate” link and pray for the best. If you’re going to sell products, then really sell them. Create or acquire the best quality products you can, and give your visitors compelling reasons to buy. If you’re going to do this, then fully commit to it. Don’t take a half-assed approach.

Either be full-assed or no-assed.

Now it is practically up to people on what they choose...

Viva - la - blog !!

  1. You have to create balance on your blog so you don't over do it with the ads though. Your blog is a good example. You have a nice amount of ads in places where your visitors can see them, but they don't dominate your blog so as to distract from your writings.

I also like to include Amazon ads of items that are related to my blog. Or if I write a review of a book or a movie I'll include an ad within the post at the bottom.

  2. The best part about blogging for your own products or sites is that you have the freedom to express. So the words should be chosen carefully since they can either make or break your work. Blogging opens all avenues of communication and advertising, this wonderful if used wisely can do literally do wonders to your product or site. Be expressive, but carefully choose the words to do so.

  3. Blogging for some people is like a dare, and sometimes it can go out of hand when advertising or asking for donation. This is one tool which is very sensitive and should be carefully used. There has to be a certain amount of passion when advertising one's product/site etc. or for that matter even general blogging. By far blogging is the best invention of information technology for communication in the net today.

  4. I agree with everything you've said in this blog entry. Definitely do not put up a donate button. I've done that and nothing happened except I felt like a homeless man begging for change online. When people did donate, that's all I got; change. Blogging can generate a decent amount of income if you are careful with your SEO writing, as well as your PPC programs.
